If you do not know whether “Mormonism” is true or untrue, I am perfectly willing that the Devil should assail you until you learn for yourselves.
I would add also, until you act upon it for yourselves for there is no power in latent knowledge, only in faith or action upon that knowledge. Put another way in D&C 105:6
“And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer.”
We can make the process more painful to bear in so many ways such as weakness, being blinded by the craftiness of men, trifling with sacred things, etc. But we know that God will not be mocked and the error of our ways will again surface to give us another chance to choose.
“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.” C.S. Lewis
