Here is the story of one ninety year old who learned the truth and source of self-repeating enthusiasm. She was in a wheelchair. One leg had been amputated, she lived alone, did all her own housework, cooking, even working a vacuum cleaner. When asked, “what do you do when you get discouraged?” she replied:
“Why, I just get over it. What else is there to do? Listen, I went for that “Son Business.” Here is the way it is. I read the Bible and I believe what it says, and one think I keep repeating is this: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
And you know something, that Bible doesn’t qualify that promise by saying except if you aren’t in a wheelchair minus a leg and if you are ninety years old, or what. It just promises abundant life — period. And so I repeat, this promise to myself and take abundant life and I’m happy and I have a ball.” Source
It’s natural, and we shouldn’t be afraid, to go through challenge in life. It’s the reason we are here and refines us into who we need to become. Challenge doesn’t immediately change a person, but it reveals his character to himself.
After hurricane Katrina a reporter asked a local resident how they changed from the devastating storm, the response put words to truth.
“The storm didn’t develop character, it revealed it.” As James Allen said, “Circumstance does not make the man, it reveals him to himself.”
Although we don’t always have a choice on the custom curriculum God gives each of us, we do have a choice on how we react to it. Our reaction shows our weaknesses and strengths. The fact of life is, we have a choice on what our mental attitude is and that will in large part determine the next experience and build upon itself. Perception direct behavior.
