Faith is the first PRINCPLE of the gospel (Article of Faith #4), but the first PRIORITY of the church is your family.
“Under God we should put our families first and then our employment and then our ward and stake callings.” President Hinckley
The church is strictly the scaffolding for the soul and support to the family, not the main institution to be worshiped or worked independently.
“The family is ordained of God. It is the most important unit in time and in eternity. Even before we were born on the earth, we were part of a family. Each of us “is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents” with “a divine nature and destiny” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 102).
“If you will accept it in your mind and cradle it in your feelings, a knowledge of the restored gospel and a testimony of Jesus Christ can spiritually immunize your children.
One thing is very clear: the safest place and the best protection against the moral and spiritual diseases is a stable home and family. This has always been true; it will be true forever. We must keep that foremost in our minds.
This shield of faith is best fabricated in a cottage industry. While the shield can be polished in classes in the Church and in activities, it is meant to be handcrafted in the home and fitted to each individual.” Boyd. K. Packer, Do Not Fear 2004
What is the role of the church?
“The Church provides the organization and means for teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to all of God’s children. It provides the priesthood authority to administer the ordinances of salvation and exaltation to all who are worthy and willing to accept them” 1.1.5 Handbook #2
What about single people?
The first principle of the gospel or prioirity of the church doesn’t change because of relationship status. Singles have some form of family. Everyone born into this world comes from, has or is working on creating their own family. I believe the charge is the same for singles; supporting their current and creating their own family (finding a spouse) should have the same level of priority. What would you say of a father who put hobbies, travel, work, or friends above his own family? What of a single man with the same priorities?
God doesn’t save churches, he save souls (salvation) and families (exaltation).
“Learning by faith requires the bending of the whole soul, through living being attuned to the holy spirit of the Lord.” Harold B. Lee
